Welcome en Limousin

Where are we and how do you get here?

Farmhouse, 120ft Barn, Bakery, Pigsties and 20 acres of fields!

Our base is near the small town of Chalus, famous for being the place where Richard the Lionheart was killed in 1199. Our small farm at Joffreny is to the east of Chalus, just off the D901 road to Bussiere Galant, which is about 30 kilometres south of Limoges. The easiest way to find out where we are is to check ViaMichelin.com. You will be presented with the highest resolution image, so you will have to zoom out (click the 'minus' button) for context.

Next door to Chateau Joffreny

Chateau JoffrenyOur little farm used to be part of Chateau Joffreny. The chateau started life in the 1600s as a hunting lodge, and over the years has been added to and modified. The Chateau is now owned by Hans and Alexandrine Peters, who fortunately like English sportscars!

The border of the Limousin and Aquitaine (Dordogne)
Chateau MontbrunOur farmhouse is only a few kilometres from the border between the Limousin and Acquitaine. This boundary marks a very important historical border between an old part of England and the rest of France. This area is littered with castles which used to guard the border, like the spectacular Chateau Montbrun.

On the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela - La Route de Saint Jacques
This area of the Limousin is on the main route south for Pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela, in NW Spain. The emblem of the Pilgrims was the Scallop - or St Jacques (in French). You will see brass plaques on the pavements in many local towns shwoing the routes that the Pilgrims used to take.

We're on the Napoleonic map too
The majority of France was remapped by Napoleons army, to ensure that the army knew all of the best routes around France. Even our fishpond ("pecherie" ) is marked on the map, as it could provide a watering hole for cavalry.

How did we get here?
For an indication of how we arrived at this point, take a look at the article on French Entrée - Limousin. We have also recently had an article published in Geoscientist Magazine (the magazine of the Geological Society of London - Greg is a fellow of the Society!), and in Safety Fast , the magazine of the MG car Club.

Just south of Limoges
Limoges is the capital of the Limousin, and has been in existence since Roman times. It is famous for its porcelain, which is made from the local kaolin that is quarried near St. Yrieix-la-Perche, just south of Limoges, and a few kilometres from our base.
